San Clemente Real Estate Guide
San Clemente - "Spanish Village By the Sea"
Founded in the late 1920s by developer Ole Hanson, former mayor of Seattle, San Clemente property development set the standard for planned communities in Orange County. In 1926 Hanson bought 2,000 acres of Rancho Santa Margarita with a vision for a "Spanish Village By the Sea," and spent the next several years following his plan beautifully. The first San Clemente neighborhoods featured carefully-modeled waterfront properties with Spanish-style houses in white stucco with red tile roofing. Many of these San Clemente homes have been well-preserved, and are now some of the most sought-after properties in Southern California. Casa Pacifica, home of former U.S. President, Richard Nixon, is a great example of one of these estate homes. Development since the 20s has been well managed. Newer homes and San Clemente condos often pay homage to Hanson's vision.
San Clemente's business and retail community also includes many of the same merchants that have helped the city grow over the years. Avenida Del Mar, the city's shopping showcase, is an eclectic mix of independent local shops and destination stores with something for everyone.
